Most of my artwork ends up being late-night studies of color, style, Baroque design, or whatever I'm interested in at the moment. Thankfully, Oxford and Ole Miss are the best and easiest ways to practice Portuguese Baroque, French ornamental design, beautiful pink pastels from 18th century French Madame Pompadour, Louis XVI's gorgeous Versailles design, the chinoiserie influence in European Decorative Arts, and the ability to see and appreciate so MUCH culture, intrigue, and fascination! Somehow, by the grace of God, Ole Miss and Oxford just seems to like everything that I like--from modern design, statues, to classical arts. I majored in English and Art History, and I love nothing more than reading my Art History texts and thanking God for Dr. Betty Jane Crouther, my Art History professor. Somehow, I landed in the realm of Art History, when the Interior Design program was no longer available, and I decided that studying English and Art History were my favorite and most inspiring things to do outside of campus activities, swaps, and social life. Thankfully, the rich cultural experience founded a journey to keep learning, to keep drawing, and to keep painting. Fortunately, I learn through art--so, most everything that I draw is a "study." I'm not interested in the painting or the picture nearly as much as the process. For example, in my Rome and Vatican Cathedral artwork, most of the focus relies upon lines, shadows, negative and positive space, and the essence of shadow, color, and all the variations of paint and line drawings. Everything is a fascinating study--and while Cathedrals and grand architecture can take time, I find so much joy in smaller projects that allow me to add French chandeliers and favorite fabric samples to Ole Miss tents, decor, and the exciting flair found in our classic Southern tailgates. The Grove is such a festivity--a showcase of cammeraderie, community counties, and pride--a sincere gesture to embrace and to welcome everyone (even the opposing team) into the grace of the Grove. Therefore, Ole Miss has become my favorite subject to try new European Decorative arts designs. If I see a new fabric in Paris, and I'm absolutely in love with the color tones, but unsure of how to work it into a painting, I try drawing it over and over again on an Ole Miss tents...because where else in the world can you playfully paint Pierre Frey--other than the Grove?!? So, there you go--everything is a study, and Ole Miss allows me to explore, make mistakes, learn, enjoy myself, and appreciate the charm...just like the days on campus, writing at Rowan Oak, basking in the sunshine waiting for class, hiking up the hill from Stewart Dorm for those 8am classes, and then racing to meet friends in the Grove for Spring concerts or baseball games. Days are not forgotten, and the charm of good times lives forever in the soul. I am so grateful that Ole Miss allows me to capture this essence with every piece of artwork--no matter how the painting looks once complete, I'm grateful that our beautiful campus allows the opportunity to step outside of the canvas to be an instrument in sharing the beauty of art and design, culture and religion, and the human spirit of God, creativity, and beauty, throughout the world. As Faulkner said, "To understand the world, you must first understand a place like Mississippi." Thankfully, Mississippi allows itself to be a canvas for writers, artists, and literary figures throughout the world.
